BIBLE STUDY:
COLOSSIANS 3:12-17

Hope everyone is doing great! Sorry for the lack of posts lately. I’m back with a study of Colossians 3:12-17, which I looked at closely this morning and definitely felt the urge to share it with my brothers and sisters in Christ. The study reminds us of the qualities of a true follower of Christ, and how each day we must fill our hearts with God’s word.

SCRIPTURE:
12 Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tender hearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. 13 Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. 14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.
16 Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. 17 And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.

Verse 12 – Remember at all times that God has chosen YOU! In darkness, in sin, and in brokenness, God wants you to remember He has chosen you to be part of His holy people. When we feel unappreciated, we must remember just how much we mean to God, as He has hand selected each one of us to inherit the crown of righteousness after leading a life that glorified HIM.

Tender hearted mercy: We must forgive one another, remembering the way Jesus poured His mercy and love for us on the cross. How can you expect God to forgive you for all your wrong, if you are constantly seeking revenge on those who have hurt you? Pray today for a tender heart, a heart that is softened towards others and a heart that is sensitive to Gods voice.

Kindness: We must be prepared to serve others in kindness, as when we serve others, we are serving Christ. Remember to be kind in all that you say and do, constantly asking the Holy Spirit for the conviction of the kindness of your actions daily. When we look through the gospels, we see Jesus filled with compassion and kindness to ALL people; therefore we must yearn to imitate His love.

Humility: Who do you give glory to? We must remember to never become consumed with self – righteousness, but remain grateful to JESUS for everything going on in our lives. Find joy in honouring others before yourself, and find the GREATEST joy in practicing giving God all the praise!

Gentleness: Let a gentle spirit shine through you, so that Jesus can use you to reach out to others. Do everything with love and tenderness.

Patience: Demonstrate the patience God has with you, unto others. When you take time to reflect on how much you turn away from God, you begin to realise how important patience is, and how easy it is for our flesh to take over in anger towards others. Do not let a lack of patience stunt your walk with Christ, but instead, always be prepared to pray for endurance in our relationships with others.

Verse 13 – We offend Jesus every single day, through sin, but yet we find it so hard to forgive those that have hurt us over and over again.I know that I have broken Jesus' heart so many times, so I have no right to be bitter towards those that hurt me. Take on the heart of Jesus, and make the decision to start forgiving with your whole heart, and not just temporarily.

Verse 14 – Love overtakes all things. In 1 Corinthians 13, we are shown the importance of love and how its significance overshadows all things. Love is so powerful, and brings unity within the body of Christ. It is what binds us together, so that we remain focused on God and not this world. We serve the Kingdom much more efficiently when we are clothed in love, for what we do and how we love is a larger portion of evangelising. We must unravel Gods word through our actions of love.

Verse 15 – HOLD YOUR PEACE! I repeat, HOLD YOUR PEACE! {My girls know that’s my favourite piece of advice!} Maintain your peace by being rooted in God’s word, and if you’re struggling in this area like I am, say a prayer daily for that extra bit of calmness. Jesus’ peace covers all stressful situations, whether it is people or work, so let that rule in your heart. Replace your daily frustration with the peace Jesus has to offer.  Commit time each day to say thank you to God for all that you have. It may be small or big in your eyes, but know that each day God has done SOMETHING for you. Show Him that you are grateful for his consistent grace in your life, even when battling in troubled times.

Verse 16 – The message of Christ will make you RICH! SPIRITUALLY! Take time to get to know His word, so that it may be the centre of all you do. Fill your lives with God’s sacred instruction, and learn to APPLY it in your everyday life. Always be prepared to help your brother or sister, through the wisdom that GOD gives. Remember that God works through you, so always be ready to council or give advice, knowing that it is the Holy Spirit who speaks to the person, not you. This verse also mentions singing! Worship God with grateful hearts. The power of music is so great, so give some time to listen to praise and worship songs, so that your heart will be bursting with thankfulness!

Verse 17 – In all you say and do, reflect on the idea of you being the representative of Jesus. Be prepared to make disciples of all nations, be prepared to love others even you’re your emotions and flesh don’t want to, and be prepared to radiate His peace and compassion at ALL TIMES!

Remain busy and focused on representing His Kingdom! God needs His young people to turn back to His love more than ever!
