I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord,
urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been
called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one
another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of
peace.

Ephesians 4:1-3
We are all
aware of the ‘standard’ form of evangelising, which we know as standing on the
streets, giving out flyers, reminding people of the Kingdom of God, preachers
talking about the return of Jesus… But what most Christians forget is that your
life in itself is the biggest way of evangelising and revealing Jesus to
others.
I recently received
a question on how to handle people who are non-believers, and God straight away
placed on my heart ‘you show them who I am’. At first I was shaken by this
thought, but came to the realisation that this is the embodiment of why I even
started my blog.
I’ve always
loved the thought that even though some people will never pick up a Bible or
have the desire to get up and attend a church service, you are the closest
thing to Christ that they will engage with. Whether you want to believe it or
not, people are watching you; what you say, what you do, how you treat others
and the way you respond to particular situations. They want to analyse if this
whole ‘Jesus’ thing is real and if it really does impact a person’s life for
the better. So whilst they are living in darkness of fear, wordly desires and
sin, are you being the best representation of a Holy Living God? Or have you
forgotten about the fact that you represent His Kingdom?
In 2
Corinthians we are told ‘Therefore, we
are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on
behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.’ Notice how it mentions ‘God making
his appeal through us’, showing that God has got a pre-planned way of how He is
going to use each individual in order to glorify Him. God is using each and
every one of us to evangelise to someone about the love of God and how He sent
His son down in flesh in order to save and love us. God not only draws people
onto Himself through the Holy Spirit, but also by the help of those who are
willing to help and represent Him through lives surrendered to His
commandments.
Reaching out
to unbelievers or even just to push those who are lukewarm in their walk with
Christ, should never be done in a forceful or rude manner. If you want them to
be open to Gods love for them and you want them to give His word a chance to be
sown on good ground, you must first cover them in love and prayer. Reach out to
them with a gentle spirit that is always willing to minister to them, help them
with any curiosity they have about the Bible, and be ready to be transparent
about your testimony and what God has brought you from. Through your character,
you will evangelise the love of God and bring forth a seed of desire to know
God in their hearts. Shower them with patience, because they aren’t going to
get it all straight away. However, the most powerful act you can do is PRAY FOR
THEM. Pray for their heart to be transformed and softened towards God, that
they will be sensitive to God’s voice of Him calling them back home, and that
God will bless them with an encounter of the Holy Spirit that will point them
to the cross.
Evangelising
isn’t just about how much you can say about Jesus’ life, how much scripture you
can quote, but instead how much your life reflects the teaching and love of
Jesus Christ. Of course, use every opportunity to teach on the word of God and
bring people to your Church, but let the fruit of your tree (your actions and
deeds of your life) cause non-believers to be intrigued by your gracious and
forgiving character which God could possibly use to appeal to others. HOWEVER -
We are only fully saved by God’s grace through faith, given as His gift of
kindness.
Continue to
show others the direction of God’s throne of Grace, and let your life be the
truest representation of the holiness and purity of the Kingdom of God. I know
it’s hard to focus on constantly be representing God and His word, but remember
God ALWAYS gives us a way out of temptation and that you are given that
strength through Jesus. So continue to love on those who you believe God has
called you to minister to, and show them through your actions and character the
mighty and amazing God you serve.
