John 8:12
Jesus spoke to the
people once more and said, "I am the light of the world. If you follow me,
you won't have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads
to life."
Living in a fallen world that barely acknowledges the need
for a saviour… The need for light in the midst of a dark secular society… The
need for redemption because of sin…
Jesus proclaims Himself as the light of the world. Light is
what provides sight and allows us to see clearly on a physical level.
Spiritually, Jesus enables us to go from a stage of obliviousness to our sin,
to then acknowledging our desperate need for the forgiveness of God. Jesus is
the only One who can reveal this level of truth to us, because He is the TRUTH.
He reveals all things to us, so that we may come to repentance and renew our
hearts in faith towards Him.
Jesus came to expose the state of mankind’s wickedness and
rebellion towards God. Our fleshly desires of evil and disobedience to God’s
word are what Jesus came to reveal, and to provide a light in which we come to
an understanding of just how much we need Him. This light is what leaves us
bare, naked and vulnerable before the sight of the Lord. When we are unveiled to
what our hearts really consist of. Jesus came to give sight to the blind. Those
who are still walking in spiritual darkness are given clear vision of the state
of their hearts and that their sinful lifestyle will lead to death. {Romans
6:23}
The light that Jesus provides is also a gift of direction.
The promise of eternal life is evident when we are called to FOLLOW Jesus. His
level and standard of what discipleship is, involves giving up our sinful
nature that leaves us in darkness, to then cleaving to the light that is found in
Jesus Christ. In John 14:6 Jesus reveals that He alone is the ‘way’ – the way
in which we receive salvation. Christ lights the way in which we can truly live
holy and gospel-centred lives that are pleasing to God and glorify Him. Jesus
as the light of the world gives both the lost and believers CLARITY. We are
given peace knowing that when we walk in the light of Jesus, following His
heart and actions, we receive the life that is given in Him and through Him.
The life in abundance that is discussed in John 10:10 is ours to receive when
we make the decision to accept the call to follow Jesus and allow Him to prune out
the darkness that resides within us, so that we can walk in alignment with His
light.
May the light of Jesus that both exposes and guides, be what
is radiated through the lives of God’s people. When we consciously choose to
live in the life that Jesus provides, may we constantly ask the Lord to purify
us using His light. To consistently use His light to unmask our sin so that can
repent and continue to strive towards Christ with the light of His heart
showing us His plans and direction for us.
