God’s love for us
Luke 26:34 - Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know
what they are doing.”
Love is sacrifice.
God’s love for us was poured out for us through the blood that was shed when
Jesus died on the cross for the sake of mankind. Jesus talks about there being
no greater love than someone laying their life down for their friend; which is
exactly what He done. Through our faith in Christ, God calls us His friends and
reconciles our old sinful selves back to His holiness. At the crucifixion,
right before He commends His Spirit into God’s hands, Jesus asks His Father to
forgive those who are responsible for His death. Because we are all sinners, we
also play a part in this blame, but in the midst of our sin, God is gracious.
Through Christ, we are assured of our forgiveness and our new life, all because
of His son Jesus’ willingness to redeem and save us. Even in His last moments,
Jesus’ mind was still on us. To think that the Saviour of the whole world
endured pain, beating, suffering, whipping and spitting, all out of His
unfailing love for you is beautiful. Jesus sets the example showing us that
true love is forgiveness and sacrifice. Love is God laying down His life for
the sake of us, so that we may inherit eternal life.
2 Corinthians 5:14 - Either way, Christ’s love controls us. Since we
believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our
old life.
It is Christ’s love
that continuously compels us; it is the revelation of His love through the Holy
Spirit that constrains us from falling into sin. When we are aware and believe
in the truest form of love displayed through Christ Jesus’ death, we desire new
pure and holy things through the true renewal of our heart and mind. Here, Paul
reminds of us Jesus’ selflessness, so that we may embrace our new creation
selves (2 Corinthians 5:17). Galatians 2:20 states that we have been crucified
with Christ. Our new man is formed because of the Spirit of Jesus that lives
within us when we give our lives to Him.
Our love for God
John 14:21 – ‘’Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the
ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I
will love them and reveal myself to each of them.”
It’s simple. We show
God that we love Him when we keep His commandments. Love is much more than
simple, empty, meaningless words that reflect our temporary desperation for God
during a worship service. It’s super easy for anyone to claim ‘I love God’, but
the scripture is clear. Our love is shown through our obedience to His word and
instructions of holiness and purity before Him. Our love for God is displayed
through our commitment to following Him and our conduct when representing Him.
If we are saying that we love Jesus, we must prove it by obeying His
commandments. Matthew 7:16 says ‘you can
identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes
from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles?’
We show who we belong to, who we serve and who we truly love by our
daily actions. Take time to reflect on whether your declaration of ‘I love you
Lord’ is genuinely proved by your fruits or led by worldly emotions alone…
Our love to towards others
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 - Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or
boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable,
and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but
rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith,
is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
This scripture is
incredibly popular, but extremely hard to practically live out. Here God
instructs us to bear all things. He shows us what love is not ; it is not
selfish or self-absorbed by demanding desires of one individual to be met. It
always puts others first and never brings back sins of the past. The love that
God desires for us to show to one another truly reflects the love that many of
us have experienced from God through our own personal relationships with God.
God is so patient, faithful and gentle towards us. It is this same love that is
required to be replicated towards our brothers and sisters. A key part of this
scripture that always convicts me personally is that love ‘endures through
every circumstance.’ When we say that we ‘love’ others, we must be willing to
bear the load that the person brings. We must be able to love them enough to
push through tests and trials, constantly covering that person in prayer and
love. Our love must not be conditional - based on the actions of others. Our desire to love others should stretch far greater than the person themselves, as it should be in obedience to Jesus' commandment to love one another. So let us not take our displays of love lightly, but rather make them a
mirror reflection of the kind, persevering and everlasting love that Christ
showed us first.
God’s love is
everlasting, steadfast and endures forever. Rest and be assured in the faith
that God’s love covers all things, your sin, your shame, your guilt. By Jesus’ sacrifice
on the cross, we have been made right with God – the Author of true love.
I'll leave you with a rhema word that God gave to myself :
'' I am your source of love. The more you embrace MY love for you, the easier it will be for you to pour that love out to others.''
ROMANS 8:38-39
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love.
Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today
nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from
God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in
all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is
revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
