“Prideless accountability”
You'll soon see where I go with this.
So last week the Lord was really speaking to me about this
particular area. I didn't think too much of it at first but I had realised that
there were a number of confirmations that followed it. On one occasion it was
my brother in Christ saying how we should always check up on each other to see
how we are doing in our walk with Christ. Another occasion it was another
brother in Christ who tweeted something which related to this 'thing'. This
thing I'm referring to is ACCOUNTABILITY. For those that don't
know what I mean by accountability, here's a brief definition below.
'Being responsible for
one's actions'
And as Christians we are all accountable for each other in
one way or another. For example, if a fellow Christian is struggling in a
certain area of life, we should be that accountability partner that will help
them to overcome their struggle. But
David how does this relate to pride? Well I've understood that there are
specific qualities that make you accountable. One of which is humility. And I
feel it's so important to be humble whilst being accountable, otherwise next
thing you know, you develop in a sense a 'holier than thou' mindset. This I
believe could ultimately hinder your accountability partner to think that they
can reach the spiritual level that you're at.
First I believe we got to understand that fellowship and
accountability are two very distinct poles. I've known this particular verse to
be used to explain fellowship but I personally believe it focuses on
accountability.
"As iron sharpens
iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend."
Proverbs 27:17 NKJV
I feel like many of us believe that just being around the
person you're aiming to be accountable for is accountability. No. That's
fellowship. Accountability requires HUMBLE,
SPIRITUAL ACTION, even to the depths of intercession. The scripture above
illustrates action as iron SHARPENS,
but yet some of us are blunt. I'm telling you guys, in order to be accountable
we got to be humble enough to pray and press for our accountability partner. Or
even to fast and turn down our plate with our accountability partner. Come on
now. This verse really gripped me as it shows accountability and humility at
work. Another verse that shows this is in the book of James.
"Confess your
trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed.
The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much."
James 5:16 NKJV
Confess your FAULTS
to one another. How do you expect your accountability partner to even open up
to you if pride is present? If faults reveal your weakness then surely pride
will hold them back from being revealed. The last part of the verse says the
effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. Again, we see that
accountability requires humble action as you cannot be praying with a prideful
heart.
So to wrap up, just know that we can't be prideful if we
want to be accountable for our brethren. If you feel that you're being
accountable with a prideful heart then pray that God will make you humble and
decrease you so that your brethren can increase. Thank you for reading.
