My Quiet Time
I’ve had a lot of questions about how
to build or rebuild a relationship with God and the ways in which I conduct my
own personal time with God. I often refer to it as my ‘quiet time’ or ‘Jesus
time’ – a time where I can fix my heart and mind on Christ and not be
distracted by the outside world.
This is in no way a set regime for
all people to follow, or even how God reaches out to each person individually,
but hopefully it may provide ideas on how you can use your time with God and
how you can get yourself focused on living for Christ.
1. Worship time – this is the time where
I literally plug in my ipad/phone and play some of my favourite worship music.
This will not only help you to focus your mind of the things above that are
pleasing to God, but will also help to set the mood ready for you to pour out
to The Lord. I like to just let go of anything that is stressing me out that
day, any cares or major distractions and ask God to prepare my heart to speak
to Him without the thoughts of the world. Worshipping God and thanking Him
simply for who He is and how amazing He is as a provider, protector, saviour,
gives yourself a chance to readjust your mind onto the Blesser and His
goodness.
2. Prayer time! – This is my favourite
part of my quiet time, and is what I consider the most important aspect of it
all. Prayer is your direct communication with God, where you not only get to talk
to Him, but you also get to hear from Him. I use this time to firstly pray in
thanksgiving for who God is and the things He has done in my life that day. I
then go onto praying for myself and anything I am struggling with or need God’s
wisdom about. After this, I pray for my family, friends, Church and anyone who
has asked me to pray for them. These requests are essential, as James 5:16
tells us the prayer of a righteous person is effective and powerful. Always be
ready to intercede for others and their needs. I encourage you to bring your
requests to the Lord at this time, and ask Him about anything you need answers
for or anything making you feel a certain way. In this time of prayer, have an
open heart ready to receive whatever God has to place on it.
3. Reading His word – After prayer, I
usually move on to reading some of my Bible. This can often be done in
different ways, whether I use the tools in my actual Bible to meditate and
memorize particular key scriptures ( I love to write them on post it notes!),
or sometimes I simply feel God leading me to a certain book in the Bible which
I flick to and spend some time reading through it. If I’m finding a specific battle
is discouraging me at the time, I love to use the open bible ‘topical bible’
online to search for specific themes in scripture, which gives me direct
encouragement and God’s word on what may be pulling me away from Christ.
4. Reflection/Being Still Before God – I
love to spend time just sitting before God either in silence or with just
worship music playing in the background. By nature, I am a very hectic all over
the place type person and spend much of my day talking and laughing. Getting
silent before God gives Him a chance to speak to me, encourage me, and grant
guidance as well as instruction. This part of my quiet time is crucial when I
feel drained or stressed out, as I am able to become calm before The Lord and
let Him restore me with grace and revive my spirit again. Being still in God’s
presence is also an extremely important thing when I prepare to write blog
posts and I ask God about what He wants me to write about and which steps He
wants me to take next in my ministry in addition to my personal walk with
Christ.
MY TOP TIPS!
-
Turn
your phone off! You need to give your full attention to God. If you can, play
your worship music from a different device, but if you must use your phone, put
it on airplane mode so no one gets in between your quiet time with God!
-
-
Find
a quiet and private place you can talk to God openly. I use my bedroom because
I love to walk around worshipping, sit on my bed to pray and often sit on the
floor with cushions when doing my personal study of The Word. Jesus even
instructs us in Matthew 6 to go into our bedrooms or prayer closets and close
the door and pray to our Father in secret.
-
Make
it a habit! Be consistent! Make sure you’re engaging with God and having that
quiet time to pull back into a place of safety.
-
Approach
each day/quiet time session with God with an open heart! Nothing will change if
you are not honest with God, and are reluctant to talk to Him freely. Feed your
spirit by trusting in His instruction will be revealed if you take the time to
LISTEN
Praying for you all! Keep
your time with God sacred. It’s so easy to get worn out when you don’t spend
your time with God DAILY. Your desire to draw back into your quiet place with
God will grow as you make the decision and habit to build that relationship
with Him.
