He Is Everything He Says He Is: #4 Jesus The Eternal High Priest

Can you just imagine someone constantly praying for you? I mean consistent 24/7 intercession on your behalf? You are constantly on their mind, hidden in their heart and are being lifted up to God all out of their unfailing love for you?

1 Timothy 2:5 teaches us that ‘’ there is only one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity--the man Christ Jesus.’’ No other thing, person, event, or earthly method can give us a way to God, other than Jesus Christ alone. There is only one way our prayers can be answered, and that is through full faith in Jesus Christ and the power that He holds as the Son of God who sits at the right hand of God the Father. He alone is on the throne, the same throne of grace that the word encourages us to come to boldly to, knowing that through the sacrifice of Jesus on Calvary, we can now directly approach God with our hearts before Him asking Him for the mercy we can now receive. It is only through Him that we are reconciled with God when we repent and accept the sacrifice God ordained as our justification with the Father, regardless of our past sin and failure.  Jesus mediates a far better covenant than the first, as His sacrifice fulfils the old law, presenting a guarantee of the inheritance of God’s promises through our faith in Christ.

As New Testament believers, we are in the best position possible with regards to our access to God. We live under the new covenant of Jesus Christ that not only allows us to be washed and cleansed from every speck of sin, but gives us the freedom to enter into the presence of God ourselves. This is contrasted to the first covenant as displayed in the Old Testament, where a priest (from the tribe of Levi) would have to go into the holy of holies in the temple, once every year,  to offer a sacrifice to pay for his own sins as well as another sacrifice for all the ignorantly committed sins of the people. Hebrews 9:13 speaks about the blood of animal sacrifices being utilized to cleanse the people of God from their impurity, and goes forth in verse 14 to highlight the power of the blood of Jesus, and that as born again believers we recognize the truth in our opportunity to worship the Living God solely due to Christ offering Himself as the perfect sacrifice for our sins.

Jesus is our ETERNAL High Priest, because unlike the priests in the Old Testament, He is holy and blameless. {Hebrews 7:26} He is free from all sin and untainted from any kind of wickedness because of the highest honour He receives in the Kingdom. Jesus is given the title of our Eternal High Priest because of the oath God made regarding Jesus, saying ‘’you are a high priest forever.’’ Jesus lives forever, and therefore His priesthood lasts forever. He will ALWAYS be interceding on our behalf to God the Father, and is faithful in even knowing what we need before we come to say it {Matthew 6:8}. Hebrews 7 also covers the distinguishing factor between the old high priests, and Jesus as our High Priest. Whilst the priests before Him had to make several sacrifices continually, Jesus made ONE sacrifice of Himself that is an overflow of sufficiency in purifying and saving us. Whilst the people of the Old Testament were reliant on the work of several high priests to cleanse them from sin, as believers, we now are completely reliant on the immaculate sign of grace that is displayed through our one and ONLY High Priest – Jesus.

We have the privilege of going directly into the presence of God in repentance and to present our requests to Him because Jesus tore the veil at His crucifixion. Mark 15:38 – ‘’and the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.’’ The separation between God and man was completely destroyed through the connection of Jesus. He made a way for the fallen world of sinners to now be justified in the sight of The Lord, because God no longer holds onto our sins through His new covenant of Jesus Christ. The detachment of heaven and earth was demolished, when Jesus said ‘’it is finished’’ and gave His life for the sake of mankind’s salvation. We no longer have to send a human into the holy place to attempt to reconcile us with God, because our once broken bond with God is now inseparable through Christ tearing the veil and releasing the Spirit of God to be with us on earth. When the veil was torn, we became unified with God through Christ Jesus and we can now be assured of the hope that our souls trust in, as it leads us through the curtain of God’s inner sanctuary, the place in which Jesus has already gone into on our behalf so that we may come before God, confident in the power of the Messiah that He has sent to PERMANENTLY purify us from sin.  {Hebrews 6:19-20}
